To Market, To Market by Anne Miranda
With inventive illustrations by Janet Stevens, To Market, To Market takes the old rhyme "to market, to market to by a fat pig..." to a creative, fresh level.
As the woman goes to market and returns with each intended purchase, the animals she leaves behind make themselves at home...in her kitchen, bathroom and living room. In the end, her house is a wreck and so is she.
As I have mentioned in other posts, I enjoy illustrators who incorporate allusion. Stevens uses familiar product packaging and pieces of newsprint on each page, blurring the lines between the real and imaginary in this tale.
